Police are now releasing more details about the Polk County Sheriff’s Office police car stolen over the weekend.
According to Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd, county police were called to Stewart Road after 911 received a call about a suspicious vehicle parked with its headlights on Saturday night.
The car was the county-owned 2008 Dodge Charger, he said. Polk County Sheriff Kelly McLendon was called and he told police his vehicle was at his home, Dodd said.
Chief Deputy Shayne Garrison, who was authorized to drive the car, was then called to come to the scene.
A complete list of items stolen from the police car has been released. That list includes a 12-gauge shotgun, a black duty belt, ammunition box with 12-gauge shells, a gas mask, and two sets of handcuffs. Dodd said Garrison’s duty weapon was actually in his house rather than in his duty belt.
Police said an investigation determined that Garrison had left the car unlocked with the keys in it. His personal vehicle, a 2003 GMC Yukon, was also broken into Saturday night, but nothing was stolen from that vehicle.
Reported Earlier Police are investigating the theft of a Polk County Sheriff’s Office patrol car from the home of its chief deputy, according to police.
Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd confirmed Sunday that the patrol car assigned to Chief Deputy Shayne Garrison was stolen from his home Saturday night.
The car was found early Sunday abandoned with its lights flashing on Stewart Road, he said.
However, Dodd said police have not found his county issued shotgun, his duty belt which included his service revolver, and the bullets that were in the patrol car at the time of the theft.
County police are continuing to investigate the incident and more details are expected after the report is released later Monday.
