San Antonio police were searching Monday for a handcuffed man alleged to have briefly stolen an officer’s vehicle.

The man, identified as Andrew Davila, 40, was taken into custody Monday afternoon near Elmendorf Street and Culebra Road after police found him driving a stolen truck, authorities said.

Police restrained him and put him in the back of their vehicle, officials said. But at that point, a woman in the truck who officers had not detained took off in the truck and crashed it.

As the officers went to the truck, Davila apparently squeezed through the window in the patrol vehicle’s divider and got in the front seat. He was able to get his cuffed hands in front of his body and allegedly took off in the car, driving it to East Crockett and St. George streets.

Davila then allegedly ditched the car and fled on foot. Officials urged anyone with information to contact the police department.

Davila is described as 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds with tattoos on both arms, his left wrist and left knee.

The woman was taken into custody after she crashed the truck, officials said. Police have not yet released her identity.

The SAPD tracked the stolen police car to the intersection of Crockett and St. George streets using the vehicle’s GPS.
