Someone — maybe a small group — stole a police car over the weekend from the Unalakleet Police Department, drove it to Old Dump Road and set it on fire.
Alaska State Troopers took a call of a burning car outside the city at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and discovered it belonged to the police department.
Troopers say one suspect walked away from the car about three miles onto the ice of Norton Sound and passed out from alcohol consumption. He was treated for hypothermia at the Unalakleet Health Clinic.
Troopers are investigating. They say they have more than one suspect but aren’t releasing any names until charges are filed.
The village is on the Iditarod Trail. The first mushers arrived there Sunday morning, a day after the arson.
