A multi-hour manhunt in Vernon ends with a suspect being shot in the leg after stealing a cop car.

According to the Vernon Record, it started around 2:20 a.m. Monday morning at the intersection of Peal and Wander street on a suspicious person call.

Police tried to arrest 26-year-old Larry Miller of Amarillo, but police say he escaped from his handcuffs, and drove off in a Vernon cop car.

Weapons were discharged towards the car by at least one officer during the escape.

After a brief pursuit, police records show miller wrecked the car on U.S. 287 near FM 1949, then fled on foot.

Wilbarger County Sheriff’s Office, DPS, Texas Department of Corrections Guards and Vernon police participated in a search for Miller.

He was found hours later, a little before 8:30 a.m. hiding next to rolling plans implement store on 287.

Reports say one of the TCD guards thought Miller was making a move, so he fired his weapon five times, shooting Miller once in the leg.

Larry Miller is charged with parole violation for burglary of a habitation, and additional charges are pending.

The Texas Rangers are investigation the incident as an officer-involved shooting.
