The Billings man who attempted to steal two vehicles on Interstate 90 Sunday afternoon, one of which was a Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s vehicle, was charged with three felony counts in court on Monday.
Jeremiah William Henneberry, 26, faces criminal endangerment, felony theft, attempted theft — all felonies — and a fourth count, a misdemeanor, of driving with a suspended license.
Henneberry has no prior felony record but does carry five arrest warrants for not complying with court orders.
The state requested a $15,000 bond, and defense tried lowering the amount to $10,000.
Judge David Carter declined both and set Henneberry’s bond at $50,000.
The incident began on Sunday afternoon.
According to Sgt. Robert Lester, a deputy spotted a gold SUV – that was later reported stolen – traveling at a high rate of speed on 27th Street at 4:40 p.m.
No pursuit was initiated but the deputy did follow the vehicle out to Interstate 90 eastbound near mile marker 453, near the Lockwood Exit.
The deputy noticed vehicles stopped, including the SUV.
Lester said the Henneberry left the SUV for no apparent reason and attempted to get into another vehicle, but was unsuccessful.
The suspect then opened the passenger door of the parked deputy’s patrol vehicle who was investigating the scene.
The deputy, who was outside and nearby the vehicle, was able to taze Henneberry and detain him.
No one was hurt in the incident.
Traffic stood still for roughly 30 minutes, but slowly resumed as the investigation continued.
Henneberry will be arraigned on March 9 at 9:30 a.m.
