The boyfriend of a New Orleans police officer stole her vehicle and crashed it into a toll booth on the Crescent City Connection early Friday, but no one was injured in the incident. Destry Hall, 44, of 914 Shalett St., Algiers, was booked by New Orleans police with theft of a motor vehicle over $1,500, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, driving without a license and a municipal attachment after police say he stole his girlfriend’s marked police unit from their home and then crashed it into a toll booth shortly after 3 a.m.
Hall remained in custody at the Orleans Parish Central Lockup on Friday afternoon in lieu of $21,500 bond.Police were notified shortly before 3:30 a.m. of the recovery of a stolen vehicle that had been crashed into a toll booth near toll lane 11 at the Crescent City Connection toll plaza, said Officer Garry Flot, a police spokesman. When officers arrived, they discovered a marked police unit that belonged to a Sixth District police officer, and had been reported stolen a few minutes earlier.
The Crescent City Connection police initially handled the accident, but it was turned over to New Orleans police because one of their vehicles was involved.
Flot said that the officer told police that her 1999 Crown Victoria was taken from her home while it was parked on the street. When officers questioned Hall, he said that he had taken his girlfriend’s keys and left in the vehicle because he felt like he was having a medical emergency and needed to get to Veteran’s Hospital in New Orleans.
Hall did not have his girlfriend’s permission to use the vehicle, Flot said. Hall was taken to a local hospital for observation after the crash, but was then booked into the lockup. An accident report has not been generated on the incident, so it is unclear what led to the crash, Flot said.
