Police this morning arrested a man on suspicion of stealing a school police car in San Bernardino.

Kory A. Charlton, 20, was booked into Central Detention Center in San Bernardino on suspicion of vehicle theft, possessing a stolen car and burglary, according to booking logs.

Police dispatchers saw a man tampering with a police vehicle just before 5 a.m. in the San Bernardino City Unified School District Police Department parking lot at 536 W. Baseline.

When officers came to the lot to investigate, the vehicle was gone, said Linda Bardere, district spokeswoman.

A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy spotted someone speeding in the vehicle on Baseline moments later.

The driver abandoned the car at the corner of 11th Street and Olive Tree Lane in Highland. He jumped out of the car and ran, but authorities caught him at 5:07 a.m., Bardere said.
