A suspect is back behind bars after she tried to take off in a stolen patrol car Thursday afternoon.
It happened in Lott, about 26 miles east of Temple. The woman was originally arrested at Lott Elementary School for an unknown charge.
The officer who made the arrest put the woman in the patrol car, but didn’t realize he left the keys in the ignition.
The female suspect was so small she was then able to slide those cuffs from around her body, climb into the front seat, and speed off in the squad car.
She lost control and hit a home. The home was not badly damaged, but the incident definitely took neighbors by surprise.
“There’s been a lot of crazy stuff happening, but it really shocked us to see someone other than the police in the car,” said witness Brook Awala. “You don’t know if you’re going to get ran over or what’s going to happen next.”
After striking the house the female suspect fled on foot. Officers were able to chase her down and arrest her again.
No one was injured, and it’s not clear why the woman was originally arrested, or what she will be charged with now.
