The Cherokee County sheriff says a suspect was shot after allegedly stealing a squad car on Tuesday afternoon.

A chase began near Baxter’s Grocery in Woodstock around 3 p.m.. Authorities said a deputy responded to a call of an unwelcome guest by a house near the grocery. When the deputy approached the man, the suspect fled on foot, according to Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. After running around the building, the suspect jumped into the deputy’s squad car and took off.

Baker said the suspect tried to run down the deputy and the deputy fired shots. The wounded suspect took off down Highway 92. The Woodstock Police Department pursued the suspect, but the injured man stopped on his own.

SKYFOX 5 was over the scene at Highway 92 westbound at Neese Road, where the police chase ended. The suspect was taken to Kennestone Wellstar Hospital with at least one gunshot wound.

The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting. The GBI will review the case.
