A deputy sheriff making a traffic stop in Metairie this afternoon shot the driver after he stole the deputy’s patrol car on Green Acres Road, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said. The driver then crashed the car into the West Napoleon Avenue canal.

Deputies arrested Corey Rebaldo, 34, of 2116 Green Acres Road in Metairie.

The incident tied up traffic on both streets as deputies arrested the driver and worked to remove the car from the water.

A Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Col. John Fortunato, said the deputy stopped a white GMC Envoy for a traffic violation. Rebaldo, who was driving, got out and ran off, with the deputy following.

Rebaldo doubled back, got into the deputy’s patrol car and began driving away, Fortunato said. After seeing the man reach into a jacket pocket, the deputy fired two gunshots, striking him near the left shoulder. The patrol car then crashed into the canal.

From the south side of the canal, the deputy ordered Rebaldo out of the water. But he climbed the north canal bank into traffic and tried to get into a woman’s car, Fortunato said. She drove off, and the Rebaldo re-entered the canal.

Rebaldo, at this point surrounded by deputies on both banks, eventually came out of the canal and surrendered. He is being treated for a single gunshot wound and was listed in stable condition at University Hospital, Fortunato said.

The deputy was not injured, Fortunato said. Because investigators currently think the use of force was justified, the deputy will not be taken off active duty, Fortunato said.

It is not clear whether the man had a weapon in his jacket. Authorities did not say whether a gun was found when the patrol car was pulled out the canal, Fortunato said.

While the deputy was chasing the man on foot, the woman in the Envoy jumped into the driver’s seat and took off, Fortunato said. The vehicle is registered to an address in Kenner, and police there were looking for the woman and the vehicle Friday night, he said.

Fortunato said police plan to book Rebaldo with disregarding a stop sign, assault, resisting an officer, auto theft, hit and run, reckless operation and attempted carjacking.

He also has outstanding warrants for domestic battery and simple assault.

Rebaldo has an extensive criminal record including arrest for resisting arrest, battery on a police officer with injury, theft, possession of stolen property, simple battery and possession of marijuana.
