Police continued their search Monday night for an inmate who stole a Marion County Sheriff’s vehicle, then crashed it into a wall on the city’s near westside.

Alexis Thomas, 20, was being arrested for outstanding warrants for neglect of a dependent, criminal mischief and battery at the Marion County Community Corrections building, 140 E. Washington St., when she fled police custody, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Katie Carlson.

Thomas was reportedly in the back of a sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle when she climbed into the front seat, took off with the car and then crashed it into a wall at 50 N. Elder St. around 9:30 a.m.

Carlson said the sheriff’s office was still attempting to locate Thomas. It was unclear Monday evening how the inmate was able to steal the vehicle, and whether anyone was hurt.
