Two men accused of assaulting a Vilonia officer and stealing his patrol vehicle during a traffic stop were arrested Monday.
According to the Beebe Police Department, the incident happened during a 5 a.m. traffic stop in Vilonia on Monday.
During the traffic stop for speeding, police officials said the two men in the vehicle gave the Vilonia officer false names and were then asked to get out of their vehicle. The two were the 15-year-old driver, whose name was not released, and 18-year-old Jabariyon Crenshaw of Conway.
Instead of obeying the officer, the two fled in their vehicle toward White County until they broke down on Highway 64 in Beebe. Police later discovered that the vehicle they were driving had been stolen from the City of Bebee.
The Vilonia officer arrived at the disabled vehicle and the three fought, officials said, putting the officer on the ground. They then took the officer’s vehicle and fled toward Beebe, crashing in the area of Beech Street and Dewitt Henry Drive in Beebe while being chased by White County deputies and Beebe police.
Officials said that the two crashed the stolen police vehicle into a ditch at Dewitt Henry Drive near Carson Street and fled on foot.
Police, joined by Arkansas Department of Corrections and Arkansas State Police officers, found the two at an address on Road Island Street in Beebe. The ASP SWAT and White County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team called the two over a loudspeaker, and they were taken into custody, officials said.
Both suspects gave statements about their involvement, officials said, with the 15-year-old juvenile being transferred to Faulkner County Juvenile for felony fleeing. Crenshaw is initially charged with felony theft of property and more charges are pending, they said.
Crenshaw is currently held in the White County Detention Center with no bond listed.
Officials said the Vilonia officer was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover. Police said Faulkner County deputies were also injured.
According to an update from Beebe police, no officer from their department was injured or involved in the original incident. Officers also thanked several agencies that assisted during the search for the suspects.
“Second our thanks to the Arkansas State Police Troop B, SWAT and Air Support Unit, the White County Sheriff’s Dept, SWAT and CID, Searcy PD K9 and drones from their fire dept., the ADC K9 teams, US Marshalls Service, DEA and ATF all of whom responded to help locate the suspects in the Vilonia incident,” Beebe police officials said in a social media post.
