Jeffersonville police said a suspect got away in one of their vehicles over the weekend, hitting an officer and then leading them on a chase across state lines.

Police said they were called around 6 p.m. Saturday to The Meranda apartments on Wall Street for reports of a battery.

When they arrived, they found the victim, a woman, with facial injuries. She said she had been hit multiple times and her phone was stolen. The woman told police Jasmine Sheckles was mad at her because she believed the woman was “messing with [Sheckles’] boyfriend and child.” However, the woman denied these accusations.

Jeffersonville police caught up with the suspect, 41-year-old Jasmine Sheckles.

They said while “attempting to escape custody, [she] unlawfully gained control of a Jeffersonville Police Department Dodge Charger and fled the area.” She also hit an officer.

Police said she led them south toward I-65 and was driving recklessly across the roadway. Officers made several attempts at PIT maneuvers, but were not successful in stopping Sheckles.

The chase crossed over into Louisville briefly and then came to a halt around East 10th Street in Jeffersonville.

Sheckles was eventually taken into custody while trying to steal another vehicle, police said.

While being taken to the Clark County Jail, police said Sheckles tried to escape from the cruiser but was unsuccessful.

Sheckles is charged with the following:

  • Attempted murder (felony)
  • Robbery resulting in bodily injury (felony)
  • Escape (felony)
  • Battery resulting in bodily injury to a public safety official (felony)
  • Battery by means of a deadly weapon (felony)
  • Three counts of resisting law enforcement (felony)
  • Two counts of auto theft (felony)
  • Criminal recklessness (felony)
  • Operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license
  • Two counts of criminal mischief
  • Two counts of attempted unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle

Sheckles is set to appear in court Wednesday morning.

The battery/robbery victim was taken to Norton Clark Hospital. The extent of her injuries was not provided.

Police said the officer was also evaluated there, and was cleared by medical staff.

Anyone with additional information about the crime is encouraged to contact the Jeffersonville Police Department.
