The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) said a police cruiser has been recovered after it was stolen and driven to Cañon City just after midnight Monday.
PPD said officers responded to CommonSpirit Health St. Mary Corwin Hospital after receiving a call from security about a disturbance around 12:33 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers said a man identified as 37-year-old Manuel Trujillo was acting erratically, possibly under the influence. Due to the reported disruption, police said they handcuffed Trujillo and took him to another location.
Officers said they took off Trujillo’s handcuffs, intending to serve him a citation.
Upon taking off his handcuffs, they said Trujillo jumped in the passenger side of a police cruiser, locked the doors, slid into the driver’s seat and sped away.
Police said they followed Trujillo in the stolen cruiser to Cañon City, where spike strips were used, causing Trujillo to lose control of the cruiser.
PPD said the cruiser rolled several times before coming to a stop, where he was taken into custody by Pueblo County Sheriff’s Deputies, Canon City Officers, Fremont County Deputies, and a Florence Police Officer.
Trujillo is facing charges of Vehicular Eluding, Second Degree Assault, Second Degree Motor Vehicle Theft, Robbery, Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender, Third Degree Assault and Reckless Driving, police said.
