Police are searching for the man responsible for stealing an INDOT vehicle from a construction site on southbound I-69 near Cumberland Road.

Police say a supervisor’s gray Chevy Malibu was stolen by a white male in his 30s. He apparently got into the car around 10 a.m. and drove off while the INDOT crew was working away from the car.

The INDOT employee told police he parked the car in the worksite around 8 a.m. and he noticed it missing at 10:15 a.m. The vehicle was left with the keys inside and unlocked.

Contract workers in the zone noticed a white male, described to be in his 30s with short brown hair and a brown sweatshirt driving the vehicle, however they assumed it was an INDOT employee when they saw it pass. Police say he actually waved at the crew as he was driving away.

Just before 2 p.m. troopers from the Fort Wayne Indiana State Police Post located the stolen car. It was abandoned near Fort Wayne. Investigators are still trying to determine if anything inside the vehicle was taken.

ISP Senior Trooper Corey Berfield said, “This is a reminder of the importance of locking your vehicle, no matter where you leave it and no matter what time of day.” He went on to say, “This was a brazen crime committed in plain sight in the middle of the day.”

Troopers will continue the investigation into this incident, and there have been no arrests at this time. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Indiana State Police at 317-899-8577
